ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to detail many of the recent advances in biosensing and to attempt to predict future trends. The detection of a wide variety of compounds is necessary in today’s world. Many medical conditions can be detected by the presence of various biomarkers in medical samples such as blood or breath. One obviously widespread example of this is that diabetics have at any time a reliable and convenient method to easily monitor their own blood glucose levels with the blood glucose biosensor. Biological markers exist for many other conditions, and the detection of these markers can provide a diagnosis of the condition and assess its severity and the ef‘cacy of any treatment program. The detection of low levels of many other compounds within living systems is also crucial, with bene‘ts such as allowing us to diagnose and follow cases of accidental poisoning.
