ABSTRACT
One of the most difcult areas of the safety profession to manage is the one concerning hazardous materials. The difculty arises from the process of almost continuous hazardous materials inventory and control of incoming hazardous materials. However, this task is not without hope. In this chapter we will discuss the hazards associated with chemicals, impacts of hazardous materials, fundamentals of hazardous materials management, hazardous materials disposal, hazardous materials response procedures, and substances with special standards. The information available on hazardous materials management is voluminous. Therefore information provided inside this chapter is basic and supercial. It is intended to provide the associate safety professional (ASP)/certied safety professional (CSP) candidate with information to understand the basic requirements of a hazardous materials management program.
