ABSTRACT
The primary function of the respiratory system is to deliver oxygen from the environment to the mitochondria in body cells where various cellular processes occur leading to the production of energy, carbon dioxide and water. The respiratory system has to adapt to meet the metabolic requirements of individual vertebrates. In many organisms, including the human being, mechanical respiration and circulation are regulated to correspond to the demand of the moment (Krogh, 1941).
