ABSTRACT

Although the nervous and endocrine systems are independent, the two systems are highly dependent on each other in performing the vital roles of communication, integration and overall control of all systems in the vertebrate body. The rapid responses to stimuli in vertebrates are mediated by the nervous system on stimulation of nerves by sensory cells or other nerve cells. The endocrine system produces hormones that are transported by the blood to specific target organs that have receptors for the hormones all over the body. The effects of hormones are slower but last for a longer time when compared to those of the neurotransmitters of the nervous system. The overall homeostasis of the vertebrate body is dependent on the coordination of body functions by the nervous and endocrine systems.
