ABSTRACT

Sul te, SO32−, is a bivalent polyanion. It occurs in boiler feed water that is treated with sul te for controlling dissolved oxygen. It also occurs in waters subjected to SO2 treatment for the purpose of dechlorination. Sul te forms sulfurous acid, H2SO3, which gradually oxidizes to sulfuric acid. e excess sul te in boiler waters can cause corrosion. Sul te is toxic to aquatic life.
