ABSTRACT

Progress has been made during the past three decades to develop novel compounds affecting developmental processes in insects such as chitin synthesis inhibitors, juvenile hormone mimics, and ecdysone agonists. In addition, efforts have been made to develop compounds acting selectively on some insect groups by inhibiting or enhancing the activity of biochemical sites such as respiration (diafenthiuron) and activating the acetylcholine receptor (neonicotinoids) or the GABA receptor (avermectins) (Ishaaya and Horowitz 1998; Ishaaya 2001; Horowitz and Ishaaya 2004). Selective compounds with minimum effect on natural enemies and the environment can be classified as biorational insecticides (Ishaaya et al. 2005; Horowitz et al. 2009).
