ABSTRACT
Problem solving consists of the basic operations, level H3 in figure 8.4, which (a) reflect the whole engineering design procedure, see figure 11.1, and (b) appear as repeated building blocks of engineering design procedures in each design operation, see the inset matrix in figure 10.1, with iterations and recursions in the main cycle, and frequent calls to the supporting operations. Several models of problem solving have been proposed, including for single-solution analytical problems [381, 406, 441, 480, 494], and considerations of self-motivation, and overcoming panic/fear [348, 478, 479, 498]. Figure 10.1 shows the basic operations, and additional questions, hints and operations taken from published problem solving models, as heuristic prescriptions.
