All natural and human-made systems function as individual systems of interest (SOI) within a hierarchy of system of systems. Each higher level abstraction has a scope of authority and operational bounds (Wesson, 2005). The systems of interests in our case are the ship hull structural system, the shafting system and the propulsion system.
