Hardap Dam is located on the Fish River, some 17 km north north-west of the town Mariental in the southern part of Namibia (see Figure 1). The catchment is large (13 550 km2) and the dam functions primarily as storage of water for irrigation, domestic and industrial use. The dam, designed and built under the auspices of the Department of Water Affairs of the then South West Africa by Dyckerhoff & Widmann (dam structures) and Strabag (asphalt concrete lining), was completed in 1963. It is currently owned and operated by the Namibia Water Corporation Ltd (NAMWATER).
