A natural river changes it morphology fundamen - tally when installing a dam or other barrage across a river section. Permeability is still given for water and mostly for aquatic life by discharge elements and fish ladders. The extended cross-section upstream of a barrage leads to low current velocities and therefore to profoundly more sedimentation while erosion is minimized. Therefore a barrage often is a massive barrier for sediment transport (GWSP 2000). Many reservoirs are affected by massive sedimentation and consequently a loss of storage volume (Figure 2). The same is true for pump storage reservoirs.
