ABSTRACT

Compacted fill were used as foundation materials at a desalination plant. The site was located at a former landfill precinct in Tungun, Queensland. The site for the desalination plant complex occupies approximately 6.5 ha and it is situated to the east of the Gold Coast Coolangatta Airport. The landfill waste materials were removed and replaced with imported fill. The fill was obtained by blast loosening and ripping at a quarry approximately 10 km away from the site. The mixing was done on site using different methods to break down the rock into a well graded fill material. This quarried fill material was compact layer by layer on the site to form 2 to 4 meters thick engineered fill. The specified compaction required a 98% maximum dry density at optimum water content.
