ABSTRACT

When she was 15 years old, Emmy fi nished her studies at the Töchterschule . This did not include the Abitur (high school diploma) because she was “only” a girl. For the next three years, her parents hired tutors to help her with her English and French , making sure she mastered pronunciation and a more complete vocabulary in those languages. Although it was obvious to anyone who heard her speaking French or English that German was her native language, she could make herself understood, and her grammar was fl awless.
