ABSTRACT
On April 6, 1922, Noether was fi nally given a formal position at the University of Göttingen: Extraordinarius (assistant professor), a post that was offi cially without salary, although Courant arranged for modest compensation, which could be (but might not be) renewed annually. Even with a title and a paycheck, she still could not count on a dependable salary.
