ABSTRACT

Color management is arguably the most important practical application of many of the concepts we have discussed so far. As an abstract concept, color management describes how to manipulate color to achieve appearance matches from one physical device to another color imaging device. In order to achieve these matches, it is necessary to combine elements of color measurement, colorimetry, chromatic adaptation, and color appearance. This chapter will describe the general concept of a color management system and go into some detail about the de-facto industry standard ICC Profile Format for color management. A brief overview of color management using color look-up tables (LUTs) is also described. This chapter should be considered an introduction to the general concepts of color management and should not be considered a blueprint for creating or manipulating device color profiles. Rather, we hope this chapter brings a greater understanding of what a color profile is and what types of data it may contain.
