ABSTRACT

J.S.: The idea to conduct a series of interviews with the department’s senior mathematicians began with you. How did the idea come up? G.S.: My wife, Jill, who is a historian, suggested that a history of the department would be good. If we don’t make a record of things, when people know about them and remember them-then we just won’t have a record! When the department had its annual social event at Endicott House, the idea was fresh in my mind, and I spoke to Singer and one or two others. The response was positive, so ultimately I spoke to Mike Sipser. I just put the idea forward to see what happened.
