ABSTRACT

Modeling is the process by which artists create 3D shapes and assign them materials and animations. In other words, it is what happens when the game is being created. Another part of modeling is the technology perspective: how those shapes are represented within the game and what tools are needed to facilitate their development. Rendering is the process of creating a 2D image on the screen from a 3D world—what happens when the game runs (although writing the code for rendering is, of course, part of the production process). Because rendering brings together content and code, it is essential for the content creation team to understand what makes a model slow or fast to render and how the controls they see in their modeling programs impact the final image.
