ABSTRACT

Most games intend to give their player a sense of immersion in a virtual, although physically plausible, world. That is, a player’s common-sense expectations from our physical world about how objects move and interact should roughly hold in the virtual game world. Implausible physical interactions, 1 such as when your weapon hits an enemy but is not recognized or when your Breakout ball bounces in the wrong direction, can lead to big user frustration. Obviously, completely faithful modeling of our physical world might complicate gameplay or interfere with the progress of a game’s story. Game players, first and foremost, are engaging in some degree of escapism.
