ABSTRACT

We have now covered the start and the end of the visualization pipeline (see Figure 4.1), namely getting data into the computer, and, on the human side, how perception and cognition help us interpret images. We have looked at one fundamental visualization, namely the scatterplot. There are many other visualization techniques and systems (see some examples in Table 4.1). To make sense of them we need to organize methods into categories or taxonomies. This is necessary for us to structure our study of the field. We first review the visualization pipeline and then discuss various ways to view the multitudes of techniques and systems that have been developed to date.
