Introduction

The goal of science is the creation of knowledge. The process typically starts with raw data, which are processed to extract information. Interpretation of this information then leads to knowledge. Roughly speaking, scientific computing aids in the first step, whereas scientific visualization helps in the second one. Figure 1.1 illustrates these steps.
