ABSTRACT

Different physical phenomena may have some common features and be described by the same or similar equations. When this is the case, a study of one physical system may lead to a deeper understanding of a similar but less familiar system. In this chapter, we study systems related to the problem of oscillations of a string. Starting with the string system as the paradigm case, we go on to examine the related systems of longitudinal oscillations of a thin rod, torsional oscillations of a cylinder, acoustic waves, waves of a fluid in a shallow channel and electrical oscillations in a circuit.
