ABSTRACT

A major aspect of the design, management, and operations of a composting facility is to produce a high-quality, marketable product. Rarely does the sale of compost compensate for the capital and operating cost of a composting facility. Most private facilities rely on a tipping fee or the equivalent. However, the sale of the compost can signi—cantly reduce operating costs. Public facilities can cover some or all of the capital and operational and maintenance (O&M) costs from various sources. These could include sewage fees, municipal solid waste (MSW) collection fees, yard waste tipping fees, and the sale of compost.
