ABSTRACT

For each of the following pairs, select the one attitude that you would want your group leader or project manager to have:

• Self-con—dence versus a lack of con—dence • Optimistic versus pessimistic • Honest versus ethically questionable • Responsible versus irresponsible

When you consider each of these pairs, the desired attitude is obvious, but this demonstrates that a leader’s attitudes are important. How important are these attitudes to success? Very important? Moderately important? Not important? Actually, a person’s attitudes are critical to success, and contrary to myth, attitudes can be changed. A person who lacks con—dence can develop self-con—dence. A “half-empty” pessimist can become a “half-full” optimist. Changing your attitudes so that they are more in line with those generally exhibited by leaders can greatly increase your chances of becoming a leader.
