ABSTRACT

There are three major types of hormones in the pars distalis: the glycoproteins, the pro-opiomelanocortin derived peptides, and the polypeptides. Some have direct actions on morphology, physiology and behavior, whereas others have tropic effects on peripheral endocrine glands. A detailed account of all three types is beyond the scope of this review and we will focus on gonadotropins and prolactin.
