ABSTRACT

Contemporary perfumes contain from tens to hundreds of ingredients and are comprised of (1) essential oils derived from natural aromatic plant extracts and/or synthetic aromatic chemicals which are classi ed by structural group (e.g., alcohols, esters, aldehydes, and terpenes); (2) xatives, natural or synthetic substances used to reduce the evaporation rate, increase perceived odor strength, and improve stability; and (3) solvents, the liquid in which the perfume oil is dissolved in. The typical solvent solution is 98% ethanol and 2% water.
