ABSTRACT

This chapter moves us into the third revolution in communication. The rst revolution in communication was the development of speech, which occurred around 50,000 years ago. The second revolution in communication was the development of writing that occurred in China, in the Middle East, and in Central America, some 5000 years ago. The third major revolution in communication, and the beginning point of this chapter, was the introduction of printing with movable type. In the twentieth century, we entered a fourth revolution in communication-the electronic and Internet revolution that has already dramatically sped up the way information about obesity and other subjects is transmitted.
