ABSTRACT

Candidates for moveable data include anything more than six months old, any records archival, old e-mail, old running shared folders, SharePoint, and Web sites. Computer room A/C always seems to be under strain. One solution is to improve the facilities: replace “office”-style cooling with cooling designed specifically for a data center. Replace the few room-level thermostats and unfocused delivery of cooling with separate thermostats at each major heat load controlling focused delivery of cooling directly to heat loads. Consolidating storage creates an opportunity for multiple improvements: less expensive backup, using snapshot instead of tape, offloading the backup burdens from servers, and reducing wasteful overprovisioning. IT organizations are increasingly faced with a problem of continued growth and overfull data centers. IT departments are increasingly turning to managed hosting services to solve this problem. IT departments now have the option of using servers and storage at managed hosting services, instead of buying hardware and installing it in their own data centers.
