ABSTRACT

Servers attached to storage arrays that employ server-based backup encounter the same issue, because the input/output (I/O) load related to the backup is handled by the server. In this case, the datapath dotted line indicates that the data is read from the disks, passed across the server memory bus, into system memory, then back across the memory bus. The workarounds are to run the backup during off-peak time, but this approach is not often practical in 24x7 operations. Enter storage arrays and array-based backup. Storage arrays improve server performance because they offload the backup task and traffic from the servers. This approach leaves the servers to do what they do best, and leave a the storage array to do what it does best.
