ABSTRACT

To some readers the chapter title might suggest a how-to manual for game de-velopers, but that is not my intention. Rather, my primary audience remains mathematics educators who either want to adjust their pedagogy to facilitate the incorporation of video games into the mathematics learning they provide or perhaps want to develop a video game themselves, either on their own or in collaboration with an experienced game designer. My words can perhaps benefit the game designer by describing the pedagogic principles a game designer-or a mathematics educator working with a game designer-might consider in order for the resulting game to yield successful learning outcomes in terms of concep-tual understanding and mathematical thinking. Of course, pedagogic principles for video game design can only be effective if they are actually implemented. So, I will make some specific implementation suggestions. They are, however, merely illustrative examples to get such a reader started. Experienced game designers will likely know everything I say about principles of game design, but most math-ematics educators-my primary audience-probably do not.
