ABSTRACT

Skin is the most accessible and largest organ in the body. There has been a long history of application of medicaments to the skin for local, regional, and systemic effects. In the case of formulations intended for local activity, the contents are expected to be retained on the skin and not penetrate into deeper layers. On the other hand, while treating the cutaneous and subcutaneous disorders, the medication is required to penetrate into the affected tissue. Medicated creams, ointments, lotions, gels, and sprays constitute the formulations intended for local and regional delivery of medicaments. Specially designed vehicles are also available to target the delivery
