ABSTRACT

The genus Micrococcus, Šrst described in 1872, once contained a diverse group of bacteria that was later dissected into the genera Kocuria, Micrococcus, Nesterenkonia, Kytococcus, and Dermacoccus.1,2 At the present, the genus consists of six species: Micrococcus antarcticus, Micrococcus endophyticus, Micrococcus §avus, Micrococcus luteus, Micrococcus lylae, and Micrococcus yunnanensis.1-7 The species Micrococcus luteus is subdivided into three biovars on the basis of their distinct chemotaxonomic and biochemical traits: biovar I (represented by strain DSM 20030T); biovar II (represented by strains D7, 3, 6, 7, 13C2, 38, 83, and 118); and biovar III (represented by strain Ballarat = DSM 14235 = CCM 4960).3
