ABSTRACT

The genus Tsukamurella was created in 1988 in honor of Michio Tsukamura (a Japanese microbiologist) to accommodate mesophilic gram-positive weakly acid fast aerobic actinomycetes with highly unsaturated mycolic acids in their cell walls, encompassing chains 62-78 carbon atoms in length. Their predominant menaquinone is of the MK-9 type. It currently includes 10 validly named species, among which Šve have been associated with human infections, whereas the other Šve have been solely isolated from environmental sources.
