ABSTRACT
The genus Plesiomonas currently comprises a single gramnegative bacterial species, Plesiomonas shigelloides, that is recognized as a cause of extraintestinal diseases and, increasingly, as an agent of gastrointestinal illness. This introduction provides a general overview of the biology, taxonomy, and pathogenicity of P. shigelloides, with a particular focus on its role as a foodborne pathogen.
