ABSTRACT

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia was Šrst described as Pseudomonas maltophilia in 1961.1 This name was revived again in 1981 by Hugh.2 Shortly thereafter, the organism was renamed to Xanthomonas maltophilia because of its closer relationship to the xanthomonads.3 In 1993, a separate genus, Stenotrophomonas, was Šnally proposed with the single species S. maltophilia.4
