ABSTRACT

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue leading to enhanced bone fragility and a consequent increase in fracture risk. Both men and women are at risk for osteoporotic fractures; however, osteoporosis is more common in females. In North America, one in three women over the age of 70 will have vertebral fractures. Furthermore, one in three women over the age of 85 will suffer a hip fracture, compared to one in six males of the same age.
