ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a straight forward approach for selecting the core and the proper wire size to meet the specification for the winding resistance that can be used for both an input inductor, and an output inductor. The losses in the magnetic material will increase significantly when the converter is operating at a higher frequency. However, the core loss in the output inductor of a switching regulator is much lower compared to the core loss in the main converter transformer. This chapter provides several information of the test data for the powder core inductor and the gapped ferrite inductor. It is difficult to design and achieve the required resistance with just one wire and also have a compact design.
