ABSTRACT
Most CIOs are well aware of the information contained in their applications and databases. Many CIOs are not aware of the information contained in spreadsheets, reports, documents, forms, Websites, and other records. An Aberdeen Group report in June 2009 estimated that 40% of sensitive corporate data is in unstructured formats. žis includes ™le formats such as Adobe Acrobat™ (PDF), PowerPoint™, Word™, Excel™, email, audio, video, instant messaging, and Web pages (HTML). žis means that CIOs do not know where 40% of their sensitive data is stored and how well it is managed. In some cases where the organization is focused more on information as opposed to transactions, the volume of sensitive data in an unstructured format is higher.
