ABSTRACT

The beneŽts of RFID technology have been extended to the process of outŽtting new military recruits in the New Zealand defense forces. Traditionally, during uniform issuing process, new recruits try on different sizes of shirts, trousers, shoes, underwear, and other articles of clothing. When the recruit has determined the correct sizes, they report to a clothing clerk. The appropriate sizes each of these items for each recruit is hand recorded and later hand entered into a computer along with the recruit’s identiŽcation information. This could include up to 32 lines of information. As can be imagined, the traditional way of doing this is a laborious and time-consuming process. Of course, with any process in which data are manually entered, the data can be easily entered inaccurately. Sometimes errors would not be detected until the individual recruit was issued what was thought to be the appropriate-sized clothing later in the intake process.
