ABSTRACT

It has been demonstrated that research involving gene biotechnologies can result in discoveries, intellectual properties (IPs), and inventions. Protection of IPs by patents has become increasingly important in biotechnological, biomedical, pharmaceutical, and other industrial „elds.1-2 However, researchers in the academic setting generally focus on their research for paper publications but not on patent(s). Why? There are two major factors. One is that some academic researchers may lack knowledge in terms of inventions and patents. The other is that most academic researchers are pure science research-oriented and hence they are particularly interested in research publications but not in inventions and/or patents. Nevertheless, recently a number of new biotechnology „rms established with inventions from universities have changed some academic researchers’ focus and interest. What are intellectual properties? What is invention? How do you protect your IPs and/or invention? This chapter describes and provides some basic tools or guidelines on these topics-basically Patent 101.
