ABSTRACT

The controversies that Gregory is referring to started early in the 19th century and continued into the mid-20th century. These battles are now largely over, since modern neuroscience and increasingly sophisticated psychophysics have resolved most of the issues over which there was such dispute. Still, color is significantly misunderstood by many students and practitioners of computer graphics. Ask the average person involved in computer graphics to define color and you will likely get one or both of two common answers: “color is RGB” or “color refers to the wavelength of light.” While there is a sliver of validity in both answers, neither captures what is central to the concept of color.
