ABSTRACT

Safety professionals should be aware that there are a number of laws safeguarding individuals’ rights to privacy. These laws, on both a federal and a state level, encompass a broad spectrum of privacy issues, ranging from wiretapping to whistleblowing, and offer recourse to individuals whose rights have been violated. Although most safety professionals will have limited direct interaction with these laws, it is important that a prudent safety professional be aware of these laws so not to inadvertently violate any individual or employee’s rights while performing the duties and responsibilities of the safety function.
