ABSTRACT
Fluctuations connect the states of a system by accident. By contrast, when variables are ˜ne-tuned and coordinated with heat and work exchanges, the states are linked by design. We consider a special type of design, one that de˜nes a locus of nearestneighbor state points. The sequence of points marks a pathway in the manner of a computational program.
