ABSTRACT
Figure 2.1 shows a ‘dogbone’ specimen which has been tested in direct tension. As might be expected, failure occurs by a through-going crack, which in the photograph is just visible traversing the specimen below the upper shoulder. The geometry of the crack has clearly been influenced by the irregularity of the micro-structure as it found its way through and around the individual marble crystals.
