ABSTRACT
The time over which a rock is subjected to stresses and strains varies over a large spectrum, from the milliseconds of blasting to the millions of years during natural tectonic processes. In Chapter 9, we considered time dependency through considerations of creep and stress relaxation. In this Chapter, we will describe the dynamic response of rock, i.e. the loading of rock over fractions of a second.
