Cardinium bacteria are a recently discovered group that form a new monophyletic bacterial taxon within the phylum Bacteroidetes. They have adopted a symbiotic lifestyle and reside in the cytoplasm of their eukaryotic host. Many of them have developed the fascinating capability to manipulate host reproduction in various ways.
