ABSTRACT
In earlier times, it was possible for amateurs to make useful contributions to science. Today, this is much more dif€cult, and university quali€cations are usually mandatory for someone to become a practicing research scientist. Requisites for university degrees in science vary between countries and even between universities in the same country. The following remarks are therefore rather generic and largely based on my own experience.
