      ABSTRACT

Today, more and more organizations are embracing Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and service management frameworks. One of the challenges is that many of these organizations do not gain the full benefit of these frameworks. These organizations look at service management as an infrastructure initiative and do not understand that it involves the entire lifecycle of service delivery. Yes, the service management process does involve the development and operation of the organization’s infrastructure operation, but it also includes the incident, problem, and service level processes. Service management also includes the development and release of services into the IT environment. On the surface, most organizations would agree that some type of development process should be followed in the development of infrastructure components, but in reality, if there is an infrastructure development process, it is done in isolation within the infrastructure management group and not as part of the holistic service development process. Therefore, the benefit derived from a lifecycle approach is not realized.
