ABSTRACT
These words by national consulting gas engineer Humphreys (brother of the renowned AmericanScott gas engineer, Dr. Alexander C. Humphreys) reminded the American Gaslight Association membership in 1883 that a gasworks was then no more or less than the sum of its geologic foundation. Today, the whole issue of the environmental consequences of yesterday’s gas or coke production is highly controlled by that same geologic equation.
