ABSTRACT

This chapter includes various “lesser” categories of sites that either generated some of the usual spectrum of toxic coal distillation or carbonization toxics, or that may be confused with such sites. In the Žrst case, the term “lesser” generally applies on account of a lower potential for being sites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination due to smaller volumes of gas produced, or by virtue of having been replaced by improved gas-manufacturing technologies. Most of these processes had patents that were made obsolescent by carburetted water gas (CWG).
