ABSTRACT

The 1979 Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP) celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2009. The CLRTAP, a very successful Convention, is the oldest multilateral environmental agreement (MEA) addressing air pollution. Under this Convention there are eight protocols, all of which have entered into force. These protocols have helped bring about drastic cuts in air pollution in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region (Sliggers and Kakebeeke, 2004).
