Historically, the žrst organizations to be concerned with chemicals management were national scientižc organizations and related chemical societies. This chapter will consider the evolution of such societies, and especially of the two national chemical societies which are currently the most in§uential, the oldest, the U.K. Royal Society of Chemistry, and the largest, The American Chemical Society (ACS).
